Countdown to conference
There’s not long to go until the World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE 2012) - the largest event in timber engineering with a global reach. Being held in Auckland for the first time, from July 15-19, it’s an exciting time to be hosting this event, as interest in timber buildings flourishes worldwide.
More than 500 engineers, architects and researchers from 36 countries are heading to the conference, where they’ll learn about the latest developments and be inspired to use timber in a wider range of structures. And researchers from The Structural Timber Innovation Company (STIC) will make a significant contribution, sharing their work in some 30 presentations and posters. STIC Chief Executive Robert Finch says the large New Zealand and Australian contingent presenting reflects the world-leading timber research and innovation coming from this part of the world.
“You just have to look at the timber buildings going up around the country to see the cutting-edge design that these innovations are enabling. LVL and glulam technology – like STIC’s EXPAN building system – means timber can now stand up against steel and concrete as a viable option for commercial buildings. And Australasian designers are embracing the opportunity to use a natural, sustainable product to come up with beautiful, strong, eco-friendly buildings that are turning heads internationally.”
WCTE Steering Committee Chairman Hugh Morris says the conference will provide a great showcase of New Zealand and Australia’s achievements, innovation and expertise in timber engineering.
“In the 1980’s New Zealand was internationally recognised in this field. Now, with recent innovative timber buildings, the appointments of Professors in Timber Engineering and the depth and range of the resulting research, as well as developments from STIC, mean that New Zealand is again recognised as prominent in international research and innovation. We’re looking forward to sharing this with a global audience in Auckland.”
