Timber commands attention in Christchurch
Huge timber beams and columns in a new EXPAN building in Christchurch are turning heads, and turning people towards building in wood.
EXPAN’s post-tensioned timber building system is on dramatic show in the Garden City at the moment, with the framework up on a three-storey commercial building in Victoria Street.
And it’s certainly got people talking. The striking wood structure has caught the attention of property owners, engineers and architects, who’ve contacted Rob Finch, CEO of the Structural Timber Innovation Company, the developers of EXPAN. One property owner was all set to build a new central city structure in concrete, but after seeing the Victoria Street framing, asked her architect to redesign it using the EXPAN system. It’s even hit social media, with one Twitter user posting a shot of the building with the tweet ‘Love seeing #chch using wood for the inside!’. Other Twitter posters said they hoped the timber would remain on show in the completed design – which is exactly what architects Sheppard & Rout and engineers Kirk Roberts have planned.
Several buildings using EXPAN are in the final design stages in Christchurch, with great interest from a host of others looking to utilise the technology. Watch this space!
